Rules & laws

Five documents, one set of expectations. The rulebook is between players and staff enforce it. The Bill of Rights is the town's promise to your character. The Book of Laws is what the court sentences from.
In character, and binding on the town rather than on you. These are the things your character can hold Cold Creek to, and the court is where they are raised.
These rights as defined are intended to protect the player, the experience and the server.
The Bill of Rights supersedes all laws. Laws may add to it, but they may not take from it.
The town of Cold Creek holds that a person does not stop being a person when they are arrested, and that a law nobody can read is not a law. The following are guaranteed to everyone inside the town limits, whatever they are accused of and whoever is accusing them.
You have the right to speak your mind, both in game and out of game. All players are adults and should conduct themselves as such.
Possession of firearms is not illegal within Cold Creek. Check local ordinances for stipulations.
You are told what you are being arrested for, at the time of the arrest, in the words the Book of Laws uses. That book is published in full, so nobody is charged under a law they had no way of reading.
You are not required to answer an officer's questions. Refusing is not an admission, it is not obstruction, and it cannot be charged as either.
You may have someone speak for you before the court, and you may ask the court for the time to find them. A hearing does not begin because you happened to be unrepresented and available.
An officer who searches you, your vehicle or your home has to be able to say what they were looking for and why they believed it was there. Consent can be given, and consent once given can be withdrawn.
An officer may use the force the situation calls for and no more. A person who has surrendered is in custody, not in a fight, and what happens to them after that point is the department's to answer for.
Where the Book of Laws sets an amount, it can be posted. Bail is a condition of release while a case runs. It is not a payment that makes a case go away, and no officer may price it themselves.
The officer who made the arrest files the charge. A judge rules on it. The two are never the same person, and a department cannot convict anybody.
You are entitled to hear the case against you and to put your own account of it before any ruling is made. A case decided on one side's story alone is not a case.
Anything seized or impounded is recorded against the case, held, and returned when the case ends, unless the court orders otherwise and says why.
Anyone in Cold Creek may bring a civil claim against anyone else, including the department and the town itself. Being on the payroll is not a defence.
Your record, the charges against you and what you owe are yours to see, at any time, without asking anybody's permission.
When a case is closed you cannot be charged again for the same act. A closed case is closed whichever way it went.
Which document you want. If another player broke a server rule, that is the rulebook and it goes to a staff ticket. If the town broke one of these, that is your character's complaint and it goes to the court. Sign in to CreekLink to read your own file or to file against somebody.
